March 31, 2020. - Black Rock Sound

March 31, 2020 - Black Rock Sound
7:00 pm- After my morning stretches and our coffee Steve decided to hoist me up the mast to change a bulb seeing that it was calm.
It is always a gorgeous view from up above. Didn’t bring my camera though.
2:00 pm-  The wind started coming from the North and it was getting a little bumpy so we moved to the other side where we would be more protected.

11:00 am- Seeing that we have time on our hands, we decided to lift all our floor boards and clean the bilge. We store food and beer under the floor.
Good thing we checked because there were a few beer cans that bursted. At least it did not go in the bilge since they were in a closed container. Poor Steve had to say goodbye to a few of his beers. One job we won’t need to do when we get GaYa out of the water.
We also washed all the Bimini windows and now look so clear. Amazing how the salt coats them.

7:00 pm- Dinner tonight is chicken, stuffing, cranberries and salad.

After the sun set, the sky lit up with multiple colours.

It is unfortunate that everyone is in quarantine. It sure changes the atmosphere. The last time we were here, things were alive and everyone would socialize. Interesting how the pandemic not only changed the mood back home but it also affected here in the Bahamas.  As I look at the different flags on everyone’s boat whether Canadian, US, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, we as a world are all affected. Strange how one virus has united us in working together to resolve this issue.  We can only hope it will be resolve soon.
Before going to bed, we watched a couple of episodes of Norseman. It is so funny. Nice to watched something that makes you laugh during this time.
We will be leaving in the morning.

March 30, 2020 - Leaving Staniel

March 30, 2020- On our way to Black Rock Sound, Eleuthera
7:30 am-  While enjoying the beautiful calm weather sipping on our coffee, we observe some boaters lifting their anchors and leaving. Steve looked at the weather and said let’s go. I just love these spur of the moment decision.  We finished gulping our coffee and lifted the dinghy up on the davits

8:30  am- Anchor is raised and we are headed to Eleuthera. We said goodbye to Julia and Brad via text since their radio was off.

11:00 am- What a gorgeous sail with no motor running. We are going at least 6 nm. Steve has two of his fishing rods out. One rods with Ballyhoo and one with a cedar plug.

Hoping for a fish dinner tonight.

He might just have to contend eating Gold fish rather than Mahi.

1:00 pm-  The wind died down and we had to motor sail. We get caught up on news along the way they satellite radio.
3:30 pm-  Steve just can’t believe how he has not caught a fish. Guess it is going to be hamburgers tonight.
4:00 pm - Went by Cape Eleuthera marina and resort. Normally we would stay there a couple of nights since we really like the facilities there. We figure the restaurant and the pool would be closed and I didn’t need to do any laundry.
5:15 pm-  While we were underway, I decided to take a nice long needed hot shower. Steve followed me afterward. It felt so good. Also, put sweet potatoes in the oven.
There was a dark cloud which went above us and sprinkled us with a few drops but stopped within  5 minutes.

6:00 pm-  We covered 49.96  nm and arrived at Black Rock Sound Harbour.  There are at least 2 dozen boats anchored here however it is a big harbour and it doesn’t feel crowded. Sat down before dinner and had a glad a wine.
6:30 pm-  Dinner is hamburgers with sweet potato fries.
After dishes we watched a Netflix series before going to bed.  Funny how we could hear someone playing bongos on his boat. Usually you can hear guitar.

March 28 & 29, 2020 - Staniel Cay

March 28, Staniel Cay
It is so wonderful to see the sun rise and be blessed with health. With everything going on, I am not taking these moments for granted.
7:00 am-  Did my morning stretches before having my morning coffee.
9:30 am- I decided to wash a few towels and pillow cases since I want to avoid going to the laundromat. I never realized how much water you need to wash and rinse items. Good thing we have a water maker. I always appreciate our washer & dryer when I get home.

10:00 am- Steve went to the marina to see if he could fill his fuel containers. He tried calling them on the radio but had no response. He came back with full containers.
When he returned, we decided to defrost and clean the fridge. It is a great way to see what you have.
I also decided to try a new coleslaw recipe which Karen shared about a month ago. She said it last quite awhile in the fridge. Glad cabbage last a long time without being refrigerated.
2:15 pm-  We decided to go for a brief ride inthe dinghy just to get out. We noticed Brad and Julia celebrating Sagamo’s 98 birthday. ( in human years) on the beach.  We of course kept our distance. What a shame!
When we got back, I made a few fish and played my ukulele while Steve read.
4:00 pm-  Funny how everyone is getting anxious. There were at least 11 people on the pig beach and someone came on the radio stating that the beach was closed and not to screw up our privileges here in the Bahamas. There was absolutely no distancing. People are getting restless. Stene and I are managing fine so far. I just want to keep moving but he said we will wait for better wind since we will cross to Eleuthera.
4:15 pm- We had hors d’oeuvres and wine while being entertained by other boaters.
6:30 pm- Fried onion and peppers and sausage on a bun accompanied by coleslaw for dinner tonight.

As Steve and I were sitting along side of the boat waiting for the sun set, a shark swam by.

Another gorgeous sunset. It was really hot when the sun was out but already a few once it started setting.

8:00 pm-  Sat out on the boat and listened to music before going to bed.

March 29, 2020
8:30 am-  What a nice treat this morning. There is a new app called ‘Houseparty’ which allows you to conference call whoever you want. We were able to see and talk to our daughters and grand children all at once. It was a great way to start the day. That may be the way we will have to see and talk to each other for awhile.
10:00 am- We lifted the anchor and went out in the bay to spin our compass. For some reason we noticed on the way here, it was a little off. After we reset it, we anchored back at the same spot.
Anything different is exciting now seeing that we can’t walk on the public beaches. Good thing I brought a lot of different things to do. It is sure feeling different however it is a lot worse at home seeing that they are being bombarded by news. I only can listen to the satellite radio only for a brief time.
11:00 am- Our friends Karen and Robert from Bellaventure 1 just text me to let us know they just drove across the border in Maine and should be home in Nova Scotia  by dinner. They had no problem crossing the border. The Customs Officer educates them on Covid19 and told them they had to isolate for 14 days.
11:00 am-  Steve made water.  I am trying to make a basket from Palm Leaves but not the easiest. I managed to strip down all the pieces.
At least it is keeping me busy.

2:30 pm- We decided to go for a dinghy ride. We saw the locals show up in their dinghy and feeding the pig on the beach. They must bring all the scraps from their home or restaurants.

We went by the grotto but no one was snorkelling. Usually you wait for low tides and no current.

Lots of sharks were going under our dinghy.

4:00 pm-  Practices on my ukulele while Steve read until dinner.
6:00 pm-  Tonight is steak, salad and noodles sautéed in butter with cauliflower. We are now out of tomatoes. Our supplies are dwindling down. I was just talking to my neighbour about ordering groceries on line since we will have to be in quarantine when we come home. She told me to order them at least 2 weeks ahead since they have a back log. By the way, we went on Costco site and they didn’t even have toilet paper available to order. Isn’t that interesting?

March 27 - Staniel here we come

March 27, 2020 - Staniel Cay
7:30 pm-  Steve woke up before me this morning. I didn’t even get my morning stretching. Might be because I listened to an audible last night until midnight. Beautiful morning and the wind is picking up. Our goal is to get to Staniel Cay.
9:15 am- up hoes the anchor and away we go.
10:00 am-  It wasn’t too bad going thru Rudder Cur. Our sails are up and we are going 7 knots. We have the full main and single reef. Nice sail.
Not so easy kneading bread when you are  rocking and rolling down below.

10:15 am- Just went they the Galliot cut.

It is funny how we play game with other boats. We set goals to try to pass boats. We are going 7 knots under sail and catching up to this boat. He has 4 sails up but we are still gaining on him. This is the nicest sail we had in a long time.

Yay!  We past them   GaYa sails well.

2:00 pm- Covered 27.5 kn miles and arrived at Staniel Cay.
Brad, Julia and Saggy, their dog, are anchored here. We travelled with them part of the way last year.
Unfortunately we need to keep our distance. Isn’t that sad.
5:00 pm-  Homemade bread came out of the oven. For dinner tonight we are having homemade bread, smoked cheese, olive stuffed with almonds, celery ranch dressing, crackers with cream cheese and jalapeño jelly and wine.

What a great sunset

March 26, 2020 - Rudder Cay

March 26, 2020

Gorgeous morning. It is already really hot

8:00 am- Anchors up and leaving Williams Cay heading to Rudder Cay.

We just finished all our fruit. Good thing Steve cut up a few coconuts so we could put it on top of oatmeal.
9:00 pm-  When we got in deeper water, Steve put out his fishing rod and used a Ballyhoo for bait. Thinking positive.

10:00 am-  As I was preparing my bread making process, Steve called me up.

There was a hard buoy floating about near the cut and he retrieved it for me. He knows how much I like collecting buoys.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t that lucky in catching a fish.

10:45 am-  We arrived at Rudder Cut Cay and anchored near the underwater piano and mermaid which was commissioned by David Copperfield in 2011.
We figure we would go snorkeling around 3pm when tides are down and no current. In the meantime, I practice palm leaf weaving.
2:30 pm-  We went to the under water piano. Steve jumped in and videotaped.  There was still too much current for my comfort.
4:30 pm-  Lot of boats are coming to anchor in the harbour. We were entertained for an hour by a boater who tried to anchor. Steve was sipping on a glass of tequila and just kept saying “Why can’t this guy anchor?” It was nice that someone kept us entertained.
6:00 pm- Turkey tacos for dinner tonight. We listened to President Trump along the medical staff on satellite about Covid19 since we have no TV. We are trying to stay current.
The current here is stronger than the wind today. Normally the boat will point into the wind however with this strong current, the stern is facing the wind. Seeing that we eat in the stern of the boat, there was a nice breeze coming into the stern.
We watched the sunset behind the clouds.
8:00 pm- We listened to CNN via satellite where Anderson interviewed doctors and Bill Gates about the Covid and the financial market.
Very interesting.
10:00 pm- Off to bed. Tomorrow we move on.

March 25, 2020 Milestone

March 25, 2020- Big 65 today at 12:15am
Normally I don’t broadcast my Birthday but today I hit a milestone. The BIG 65. When I was 60, I successfully achieved my goal which was a hand stand. For my 65th bday’s goal, I wanted to do a head stand. I am so blessed to be healthy.
8:00 am-  Steve made me a bacon sandwich this morning for my bday. What a nice surprise

10:15 am- It has been a great day. Steve went spear fishing with Dietrich near the Adderly Cut.  I took that time to take the dinghy to an isolated beach called Coconut Island. I walked from one end of the island to the ocean side. I brought my machete so that I can cut more palm leaves.
I also found another beach with a lot of treasures such as buoys and sea fans and unfortunately lots of plastic which washed up.

12:00 pm- Came back and swam before taking a hot shower.
The men came back with no fish. They said they were lucky to even come back. They anchored the dinghy while spear fishing and all of a sudden the current started flowing so fast that they both had a hard time swimming back to the boat. Steve said waves saved him because when a wave came,  he could use them to ride them and make way. By the time they made it to the dinghy, they both were out of breath and thank their lucky stars.  Steve told me to get my camera. He was taking me somewhere as a surprise for my birthday He took me to Leafs Cay and started whistling.
All of a sudden at least 18 red coloured iguanas came to greet us. Steve gave the lettuce and they devoured it. They live around the salt pond on the other side of the beach. Came back to the boat and went swimming of course had to wear my birth suit since it was my birthday.
6:00 pm- Sausage, pasta with broccoli for dinner. We sat out on the bow wit our coffee and watched the sunset. So peaceful. What a great way to end my special day.

March 23- 24, 2020. - Towards Lee Stocking Island

March 23, 2020 -  Williams Cay
8:00 am-  After listening to the cruiser’s net, we decided it was time to leave George Town. Actually, I was getting anxious to move. It is a very difficult decision since they may close down the Marina where we get our boat hauled out in Florida. Do we rush or take our time!!!  It sure is a stressful time for everyone.

10:00 am-  After Steve dropped off our garbage in town, we lifted the dinghy and the anchor and aimed for Lee Stocking Island.
1:00 pm- The seas were rough. A sailor on Calliope talked to us along the way via VHF and said he was going to Williams Cay. We decided to follow him and try a new anchorage.
2:00 pm- Arrived at Williams Cay. It was low tide and we were bumping but managed to get into the anchorage.  We covered 30 kn miles.

After ensuring that our anchor is secure, we dinghy and stopped by the vessel Calliope to thank Dietrich and Annie Floeter from Traverse, Michigan who sail a Catalina 34. We stayed on our dinghy and ensure we kept our distance however  Steve exchanged books with them. This social distancing is not easy

We explored the island a bit after they explained where to go for a great view. They were right. Breathtaking rock formation.

I told Steve to stand  back as he was looking down the edge.

4:30 Pm- We came back to the boat to make water. Steve was a happy man during that time because of  where we were anchored. He was able to swim in his birth suit since there weren’t any boats behind us. I just took a nice long hot shower. It will be nice not to have the tv on. It creates so much anxiety just listening to it due to the virus situation. Steve is still able to get the news from satellite radio.
6:45 pm- Cheeseburgers for dinner. Relaxing with a glass of wine at this gorgeous anchorage. Haven’t sold Brent’s beer yet. ( he put 96 cans on the boat before we left Florida thinking that is what he was going to drink while he sailed with us.)
Beautiful sunset
8:00 pm-  Steve read new information on Bahamian precaution and strict quarantine news. We are so impressed how seriously they are addressing it. Very strict curfew in effect. We are safe here on our boat since it is just Steve and I. Keeping our distance from everyone.
9:00 pm-  Seeing that there is no TV, we were star watching. Steve noticed in the South Eastern sky a star that was flickering colours. I looked it up and it was Sirius. I am serious, it was flickering red, blue, green and white. With the binoculars, it was even more interesting.   I have never seen or observe that before. Also saw satellites flying by at a high rate of speed.
We sat in back  of the boat and enjoyed the tranquility.
10:00 pm- We both went to bed   I listened to my audible for awhile.

March 24, 2020 - Williams Cay
6:45 am-  Woke up to calm seas. While waiting for the sun to rise, I did my daily routine of stretching exercise. Compared to George Town, it is so peaceful here.
I am sending my family, my friends and the world many prayers until this challenge passes. I was just thinking that the sun rises and sets, the stars glitter  even with all the turmoil going on in each of our lives,  This virus is telling us how we are connected and our actions impact one another. Now we must work together as a unit to resolve this.

The sun was behind the clouds but I know it will rise and shine down on us.

11:00 am-  We went for a great walk along the beach. I just can’t believe the beauty and formation of the rocks. I just love it.

We talked to other boaters who travel the world and they told us where to get coconuts. We found out they were Wayne and Betty Romberg on Bright Ayes. Of course along with our machete  off we went to find coconuts.  We managed to bring back 2 of them.

Told Steve to watch he doesn’t cut his finger as he is husking the coconut.

Always nice to have fresh coconuts

I brought back palm fronds from the island and tried to make a basket with no success.

I did succeed in making a fish

5:00 pm- While Steve read, I went out on the dinghy to explore.  The water is so clear that I could spot a stingray and would follow it.
6:30 pm- Spaghetti and homemade bread was on the table for dinner tonight.
We enjoyed the show of stars again tonight.

March 18-22, 2020- Decisions, George Town

March 18, 2020 - Decision is Made
8:00 am-  In listening to the cruiser’s net, we tried to find out if anyone was flying in and whether there was Bahamian restrictions. Of course everything is up in the air. Sadly, my daughter decided not to come on Friday and will cancel their 10 days vacation with us. 😥. As much as we wanted to see them, we think that it is a wise decision.
9:00 am- A boater, Sojourm, stated on the net that he needed a gear puller to repair his boat. Seeing that we had one,  we dropped it off at their boat on our way to bringing our laundry and do a few groceries in town. Of course we got soaked.
We stopped at Immigration to find out about renewing our Immigration papers which expire April 20th.  This is our dilemma. Our cruising permit ends April 20th (we could only get 3 months this year. ) and they wanted an additional $500 to renew it for 6 months. We only wanted the extension for an additional 2 weeks but that didn’t matter. So we will slowly head back to Florida shortly. The boarder is closed to Canadians but we are hoping that there will not be any problem putting our boat on the hard when that time comes. For now we will enjoy our time here. We have tons of food since the kids didn’t come so we will be self sufficient for a while.
As far as the drone falling in the water, it is toasted. One of the motors burns out. Guess we will get it repaired when we return. At least we got some good footage. I was always nervous flying it off the boat.
2:00 pm-  We went back to town to pick up our wash.
We noticed in the grocery store that the clerks were not wrong gloves like they were last week. That’s interesting. Very lacks.
3:00 pm-  Steve made water while I made up the bedding and put our laundry away.
Steak and salad for dinner tonight.
Watch the sunset, watch Tv before going to bed.

March 19, 2910

7:30 am- While I was doing my stretching exercise this morning, I noticed a rainbow in the distance. I couldn’t take a photo of the full rainbow. There will be a rainbow at the end of this pandemic.
We were sent articles that travellers will not be covered for life insurance if they do not return home by a certain date. We were pleased , after contacting our CAA travel insurance representative, that we are insured totally and nothing has changed.
9:00 am-  Steve went up to a Canadian boat from Kingston to ask what they were going to do during this pandemic. They said they were going to try to go back home as soon as possible.
12:30 pm- Pea soup and homemade bread for lunch. We then went for a nice long walk on the beach.

We took a dinghy ride around the anchorage and stop at another Canadian boat names “After Glow” from Toronto and they said they were not rushing home.  They figure we were safer here since there  is only one case of virus known in the Bahamas.
We decided we will stay in the Bahamas until our cruising permit expires and then figure out what to do. There are a few areas we still want to see. Too many unknown at home.
Chicken dumplings with carrots, potatoes and broccoli for dinner tonight.

March 20, 2020
8:00 am- All cruiser’s seem to be waiting to hear on the cruiser’s net this morning whether private vessels can move harbour to harbour within Bahamas.  The prime minister never made it clear on TV and had conflicting information.
After much discussion and research the Net announced that we can move harbour to harbour and fuel will be available only during certain hours. So that is great news although this isn’t a bad place to stay if we had to.
It is a sad day for us since this would have been the day that Nicky, Brent, Lyla and Parker would have visited us. We look forward to seeing everyone when we hit land.

12:00 pm- We just heard on the cruiser’s net that all boaters including pleasure craft, can move around the Bahamas to get home however cannot stop at any islands along the way until the end of March.  So if you need fuel along the way, you might as well stay put.  There are so many conflicting reports so time will tell.
2:00 pm-  While my bread was rising, Steve and I towed my kayak with the dinghy to Flip Flop beach. I kayaked while Steve swam and laid on the beach. I noticed stingrays and managed to keep up with them.
I am so blessed to be able to be surrounded by such beauty.

Ironically, Steve realized he was wearing his Corona bathing suit. Maybe not the time to wear these.

5:30pm-  We were going to make pizza for dinner however since my bread came out of the oven we decided to have a bread, cheese, olives, celery and blue cheese. It was so good.
As we were eating our dinner, we noticed a boat dragging. When they lifted the anchor, it looked like a hair ball was caught on their anchor.
730 pm- We were entertained by boaters who played Trivia on the VHF radio. We had some good laughs.
I guess they usually play on land but because of the pandemic everyone is staying on their boat
We then watched TV before going to bed.

March 21, 2020
8:00 am-  listening to the cruiser’s net this morning cleared up some information. We found out we can sail around the Bahama islands and stop for fuel or groceries. They allow 6 people at a time to go in the grocery store.
9:30 am- Made bacon and eggs on an English muffin for breakfast this morning. We then went for a nice long walk on Sand dollar Beach.

We didn’t find any sand dollars however we found other sea treasures.

We sure enjoy our beach walks

When we dinghies back we noticed the Bahamian police. We stopped to ask them if there were changes. They said no. They were repairing one of their motors. Very nice officers that came from Nassau.

1:30 pm-  Back at the boat I made sure to wash my hands since the officers came from Nassau and the one held my dinghy line. The Corona cases are from Nassau and I figure I am NOT taking any chances even if they looked healthy.
I painted while Steve read when we got back at the boat.

4:00 pm-  we had a few squalls come thru. Steve decided to just enjoy the rain.

We love hearing the rain come down on the boat. It will give it a good wash.

6:00 pm- Pizza for dinner tonight.
It is funny how we get entertained listening to people talking on the VHF radio.

Watched  TV before going to bed.

March 23,  2020

8:00 am-  I sometimes get frustrated listening to the cruiser’s net. Communication goes out to keep your distance due to Covid19. Then one of the cruiser goes on the air inviting people on the beach to play distancing volleyball. How do you play volleyball and distance yourself. Everyone will be touching the ball. Wish people would take things more seriously.
Announcement was made that anyone interested in snorkelling or spear fishing to meet on their dinghy at 11am. That makes more sense. At least you would not be near anyone.
9:00 am-  Pancake breakfast this morning. We are still trying to decide when to start moving.
11:00 pm-  Those that we’re interested in snorkelling or fishing met in their dinghies are Chat n Chill which is what we did. We started with 5 boats and ended up with 2 since it was so rough.
Steve snorkelled at one spot but it was all grass so we left the other 2 boats and walks the beach instead. Too rough to snorkel.

It was just beautiful to walk in the water and get our minds off of everything. Nothing better than being in nature.

Cant believe what is going on here. Some cruisers  are having a party on the beach and dancing and playing volleyball when the Bahamian gov’t specifically banned social events.  They do not take it seriously. Now the local police are warning them to get off the Chat  n Chill beach. People on the VHF radio are feuding and telling them to get off before we loose our privilege with Bahamian government. We are probably going to get kicked out because of these assholes. .
We decided to leave tomorrow and head to Leeward Islands.
6:30 pm-  Pork chops, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and salad for dinner tonight beautiful sunset.

It is very interesting to see how some people need to socialize and interact with other people. I never observe that before. I always knew certain people like to socialize and be part of something however never thought it was a need.
Watch TV before going to bed.
