February 15-17, 2020 - Long Island

February 15, 2020 - Leaving George Town
What a gorgeous sunrise.  Photos can’t describe it.

After our morning coffee, our anchor was lifted at 8:00am and ready to go to Long Island  followed by Bellaventure.

2:00pm- We arrived at Long Island and covered 35.5 kn miles. We were here last year and this is the furthest south we have ever been in the Bahama.
We put up a shade since the hot sun was gazing down on us. I made this white shield but never used it until now.

Good things tend to hide at the bottom of the fridge. Steve found me the last Shock Top. I thought I already finished them.

We went swimming and then took a shower before Steve and I went on shore to a bar called Sou Side.
We met a couple from Branford who have been renting  a house on this island for years during the winter since they are retired.
Came back to the boat around 5pm. We were not hungry for a big dinner since we had fries at the bar. I serenaded Steve on my guitar for about an hour.
It is so peaceful with the light breeze instead of the howling trade winds of 24 knots.
No TV here so Steve went to bed to read while I enjoyed the peace and quiet before calling it a night.

History on Long Island
Long Island was originally called by the Arawak name, Yuma. It was rechristened Fernandina by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the New World in 1492. Archaeological evidence shows that the Lucayan Arawaks settled at Long Island as they did throughout the Bahamian chain of islands.

Lucayan people. The Lucayan (loo-KY-ən) people were the original inhabitants of the Bahamas before the arrival of European colonizers. They were a branch of the Tainos who inhabited most of the Caribbean islands at the time. The Lucayans were the first inhabitants of the Americas encountered by Christopher Columbus.

Watch the sunrise and did my routine morning exercise before a Steve made pancakes for breakfast

9:00am-  Since we noticed our fridge was frosted up, we thought it would be a great idea to clean the fridge. Everything comes out and we use hot water to melt any ice.  So nice when it is clean and organized.

10:30am- Went to the beach with Karen and Robert. Good thing there was a breeze otherwise it would be scorching hot.

We went for a long walk and then sat and enjoyed the scenery.

When we got back, we went swimming to cool off and made water for a couple of hours.
4:30pm-  Seeing that we didn’t have lunch, we had an early pork chops dinner with fried cabbage and a salad.  We will nibble on something later if we get hungry.
5:00pm- Steve read while I played my ukulele.
6:45pm- Karen and Robert came to the boat for a game of cards. My bread was rising since I started making one late in the afternoon.
9:00pm- After Karen and Robert left, I baked the bread and Steve and I enjoyed a piece of hot steam bread with butter before going to bed.  SO good. Not something I would want to do on a regular basis.
What a gorgeous night under the stars. So peaceful.

February 17, 2020
After breakfast, Steve and I went to town to rent a car for tomorrow and then we went to the grocery store to pick up a few things for my pasta meal.
We noticed how the grocery stores this year in the Bahamas do not provide plastic bags. In George Town they charge you if you need them but today in Long Island, they never had any. Seeing that I forgot my own grocery bags, they gave us a box. They are really trying to cut down on plastic. Great idea. Some places even had brown paper bags. Reminds me of when we were young.
We dropped off the groceries and then went to the information Center to get maps for tomorrow. Should be fun.
Steve barbecued a few hot dogs for lunch. I did some painting while he read. The wind started picking up so I couldn’t go kayaking.
5:30pm- We saw a rainbow just before a five minute rain. Poor Karen and Robert have to come over on their wet dinghy since they are invited for a pasta dinner.  They brought a broccoli salad. So good.
Because we are renting a car in the morning and wanted to get a good night sleep, they left by 7:30pm.
After the dishes, I packed stuff for the morning and went to bed and read.
